Boogie Shoes

Dance recital madness begins today at our house.  Stage blocking this afternoon, dress rehearsal tomorrow afternoon, a show on Friday night, and another show on Saturday night.  And yes, I'm the backstage mom for our daughter's class.  It's a crazy time, but I enjoy every second!  I danced growing up and even taught while I was in college.  So it makes my heart happy to see our daughter enjoy it, as well.  I'll never forget when she was around six years old.  We were getting ready for the show to start.  She looked at me with a huge smile on her face and said, "Mommy, this is my time to shine!"  Yes, dear child, it is!

What sorts of activities do your kids participate in?

  1. My son does swimming lessons intermittently. In the fall he'll start Sunday School. Eventually I want him to do Tae Kwan Doe and piano lessons, but one thing at a time.

  2. Our son does taekwondo. It has truly transformed him! The discipline required has taught him so much. He's four steps from his black belt and he's only been doing it for a year and a half. As soon as my hubby's overtime slows down, he's planning to start classes. It's a heck of a workout!

    1. I've heard great things about Tae Kwan doe. A friend of my husbands knows a Christian instructor who will give lessons for free. I'm happy about the Christian perspective, because I worry about some of these middle eastern disciplines.

  3. Our 18 yr. old son is a cyclist, plays basketball & is an Eagle Scout (I'm hoping he'll find some time time to volunteer with his old Troop), our 16 yr. old daughter plays lead with a steel pan band, our 14 & 12 yr. old sons do Scouts & robotics together, & our 8 yr. old daughter & 5 yr. old son are content with good ol' kid stuff...biking, tree climbing, fort building, Legos, etc. -- which works for me! It is easy to become overloaded with the many wonderful opportunities out there...not to mention the cost.

I've heard other parents say what a positive effect tae kwan do has on their child's confidence.

CatholiMom, what kind of dance does your daughter participate in? How cute that she's "ready to shine!" :) Speaking of dance, our family recently began attending some family friendly square dances, which are a lot of fun! There is a caller & live music, mostly folksy & Appalachian with some Celtic thrown in there. Our 16, 14, & 12 year olds have been to a few local swing dances, which they also really enjoy. I love seeing this classic form of dance making a comeback!

  4. This year, she's doing ballet, tap, and modern. She tried jazz last year and hip hop last summer. Our studio is great. Costumes and music are always appropriate and she doesn't require stage make-up. She likes them to look their ages. She's a former Broadway dancer and just loves sharing her love of dance with the kids.

Square dancing sounds like a lot of fun!

  5. This school year (1-1/2 more days!) my younger daughter asked to join the band at school, playing the clarinet. She has always been musical, so we agreed. She also belonged to the chess club, art club, and hip hop club, though not all at the same time!

My older daughter belongs to the school liturgical choir and vocal group. She also cantors and directs the junior choir. She played volleyball and acted in the spring musical. It will be interesting to see what she is drawn to in high school . . . .
