Memories

Where did you and your husband honeymoon?  Anything really exciting happen while you were away together?  Funny stories?

We honeymooned in New Orleans.  We're both from the south and both Cajun French, so it was a no-brainer.  We are in LOVE with that city!  We spent an entire week sleeping in, eating awesome food, and just wandering the French Quarter listening to local music.  We were married over spring break (I was a senior in college), so we happened to be there for St. Patrick's Day.  Our hotel room had a balcony and we were able to watch the parade go by.  Aaaah, what memories!

What about you?  Please share your story.

  1. We went to Montreal and Quebec, the only time either of us have ever been to Canada. It was August, but it was Canada, so I brought clothing appropriate for cooler weather. Of course they were in the middle of an unprecedented heat wave!

We made a side trip to Ste. Anne de Beaupre -- so moving. My husband wasn't even Catholic at the time, but it was important to me to visit the basilica. I also remember that we enjoyed breakfast at a little cafe called Le Cochon Dingue -- The Crazy Pig!

We said we'd go back for our 5th anniversary, but we didn't. Nor for our 10th, nor our 15th . . . maybe for our 20th!

  2. Our honeymoon, in Cape Cod, was actually 3 months after our wedding. We rent a house there for a week every summer, from my friend's parents who give us a very good rate. The rate for our honeymoon couldn't be beat (free; it was our wedding gift). We now love sharing our fondness for Cape Cod on family vacations with our son. On our actual wedding night, we went to a very nice local hotel and had a couple of days to ourselves before going back to work.

  3. CatholicMomInOz: New Orleans is great...I went there for a New Year's Eve Bowl Game my last year of college...the food, music & architecture were wonderful! I recall a beautiful Catholic Church where we attended Mass (in Jackson Square?). Being that it was New Year's...things were a bit crazy down there!

Anne in NC: I have always wanted to see that part of Canada...so much neat history up there...& visit the North American Martyr's Shrine (there is one in NY, too). Le Cochon Dingue...hilarious! It sounds very elegant...until you translate! ;)

claire: Cape Cod is lovely! I was fortunate to go whale watching off the Cape with my family when I was I high school. It was amazing being so close to such enormous & graceful creatures in their natural habitat! I've always wished I could take our children to do the same. One of my brothers lived in Boston for several years & I have great memories of cycling & camping along the Cape with him.

We spend most of our brief honeymoon hiking & camping at Seneca Rocks, as well as helping an older gentleman friend to work on his little cabin in Helvetia (small, Swiss village in WV). That was 20 years ago this month! :)

  4. Pilgrims: I'm not a camper, but I can see how that would be a really romantic way to honeymoon. I have always wanted to go to New Orleans, and I have been to Montreal twice in the past 7 years. Once before my son's arrival, and then last year we took him over Labor Day weekend. It is a 3.5 hour drive for us (it can be closer to 4 depending on how long it takes to cross the border). It was fun for my son to experience a foreign country and hear a foreign language. It's as close to a European experience that my family is going to be able to have for quite some time, so it's great having it so accessible.
