Gotta love puppies!

We're patiently waiting on a call back from a farmer who has puppies for sale.  We had a lab mix for eleven years before we had to put her to sleep after having a stroke.  Our kids have been asking for a new dog since then (four years ago!).  We've put it off, mostly because we (the adults) weren't ready for a new dog.  But then the middle school Science teacher got a new puppy and everything changed.  She brought the puppy up to school the week that we buried Ally and it did wonders for the kids in the building.  The classes took turns taking him outside to play during recess and he made himself right at home in the school office during morning Mass.  And, of course, our son FELL IN LOVE!  Our son has anxiety issues and we noticed how calm and happy he seemed when telling us about playing with Dozer.  Sooooo...here we are waiting on the phone call to see if we can adopt one of Dozer's brothers.  The puppy is half Australian Shepherd and half Great White Pyrenees, so he'll probably be around 80-100 pounds.  But we love big dogs and we have a huge fenced-in backyard, so we're good to go.  Hopefully, by this weekend, we'll be the proud new family of a stinkin' cute puppy.

Does your family have pets?  Are your kids in charge of the day-to-day care of them?

  1. Sounds like you will have one enormous & beautiful dog addition to your family! How exciting! We presently have a dog, a hamster, parakeets & some fish, all of which the children are in charge of caring for. Our eldest daughter is a natural with animals & has cared for or taken in lost, stray, or injured dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, a bat & even a baby goat. They are vying for getting some bees or chickens in the back yard so we can do some urban farming. ;)

  2. Wow, that is a big dog! Have fun!! I am a little timid around big dogs but I love almost every variety of terrier. Someday I'd love to get a West Highland white -- so cute!

No pets here. Too small house, too little money, and no one home during the day. :(

  3. My son has multiple allergies, so pets are not an option. I probably wouldn't have wanted the responsibility anyway, although puppies are adorable!

  4. Well, we're picking him up on Friday night. Our kids are so excited! My principal invited me to bring him to school with me, so he won't be alone for the rest of the school year. By the time we start again in the fall, he'll be big enough to stay in the backyard alone during the day. And Pilgrims9, I would LOVE to have chickens! We're getting ready to put our house on the market so we can move closer to school and work and we'd like to have 4 or 5 acres. Maybe I'll be able to talk my hubby into some chickens then. We go through eggs like crazy, so it would be really beneficial for us to have some.

    1. Our town ordinance allows for 2 chickens per home, which have to be a certain number of feet from the next dwelling...& no roosters, of course. I think with permission from those who live directly around you, you can have a few more hens. We'd like to have 4-6 hens...but I do worry about neighborhood cats. There is no comparison between fresh & store bought eggs. For now, we are the lucky recipients of eggs from friends who live outside of town & have several hens.
