Green Thumb?

Do you have a green thumb?  I do NOT!  My grandparents were the best gardeners ever.  Almost everything we ate there came straight from the garden.  I would love to have a salsa garden, but I just don't know if I'm up for the challenge.  Anyone garden-challenged like me or do you have an abundance of fresh veggies?

  1. I do not have a green thumb. Houseplants are at high risk under my care. I have no desire to work outside gardening in the hot sun. However, I wish I had a good friend nearby who I could relieve of extra produce. My aunt in Maine grows all kinds of delicious vegetables and always has more than she can handle, but that doesn't help me any because it is a seven hour drive!

  2. I like to imagine myself as a gardener, and more than once I've made elaborate plans and purchased seeds and plants. And then I go out to the yard . . . and it's HOT. And there are BUGS. And I am not strong enough to dig up the grass. And I have arthritis and it hurts my knees and back to get down to the ground. And so my vision of myself as a wise woman gardener remains just a vision.

My husband, stronger and more patient than I, planted a garden in our backyard for several years -- tomatoes and peppers, mostly. Then we had a summer with either too much rain or not enough (I forget) and he decided he'd had enough. Now we grow just a few tomato plants in pots on our front porch.

  3. I am an aspiring gardener. I didn't grow up with a garden in the yard, but was fortunate to work on a farm during summers in high school & college & knew I wanted to garden when I had my own family/home. I am still experimenting. Thank goodness for things like raspberries, herbs, asparagus & rhubarb that return on their own each year! I am hoping to get lettuce in soon & would like to have enough tomatoes & hot peppers to stash some away for wintertime. It is fun to have cherry tomatoes, berries, peas, beans, etc. growing out back that the children can nibble on while they play outside. Our neighborhood has a community garden in the works, so that should be a fun experiment. We put in a couple of rain barrels a few years ago & that has been really helpful for watering.
