What are you reading?

I am a book lover and always am in the middle of one or two.  So what have you read lately?  Anything you can recommend?  Any book you've read and would steer us clear from?

  1. I am in the midst of reading "Ages of the Spiritual Life" by Paul Evdokimov (recommended by a friend...very dense, but very good), "Charles de Foucauld (Charles of Jesus)" by Jean-Jacques Antier, "The Forgotten: Catholics of the Soviet Empire from Lenin through Stalin" by Fr. Christopher Zugger (a real eye-opener as to the persecution Catholics suffered during that period), & "The Cantata of Love: A Verse by Verse Reading of The Song of Songs" by Blaise Arminjon, SJ (recommended to me by the Sisters at Christ the Bridegroom Monastery...it is slow reading, as it is meant to be digested a verse at a time).

CatholicMomInOz, you didn't tell us what you were reading. :)

  2. I just finished "The Little Stranger" by Sarah Waters -- such a let down. Lots of unrealized potential, it seemed to me; the writer is supposed to be so great but this very atmospheric story went nowhere.

Prior to that I read "The New Rector," by Rebecca Shaw. Life in an English village; not bad, but Miss Read does it better.

And prior to that I read "Behind the Scenes at Downton Abbey" -- well, what can I say? I love D.A.!!

With my daughters I am currently reading two out of print books that I loved as a child, and still love: "The Wicked Enchantment" by Margot Benary Isbert and "Practically Seventeen" by Rosamond du Jardin.

My older daughter has now got me started on the "Matched" trilogy, by Ally Condie.

All so light and easy compared to your reading, Pilgrims!!

And yes, what about you, CatholicMom??

  3. I just finished reading "Proof of Heaven". It's about a neurosurgeon who had a very unique near death experience. He previously didn't believe in near death experiences and was able to use science to disprove them, but there was no scientific explanation for his own experience.

  4. We like to watch movies and I won't see a movie unless I've read the book first. That being said, I won't let my kids either. lol Our son wanted to see Hunger Games, so we read the book first. My next read is Heaven is for Real so I can see the movie. I'm in the middle of a romance/mystery right now. I signed up on Book Bub and I receive an email everyday with ebook deals. You can let them know what kind of books you enjoy and they'll tailor the email for you. Lots of free books and very inexpensive ones. Oh, and our parish is about to do a parish-wide consecration to Mary, using the book 33 Days to Morning Glory, so I'll be starting that soon.
