Friday Fun Day

What's going on at your place this weekend?  We are officially on Spring Break!  Looking forward to staying up late and sleeping in and no worries about homework.

  1. Tomorrow my son and I will do some St. Patrick's Day crafts and decorate a rainbow cake while my husband's at work, and Sunday we're going to my mother's for corned beef and cabbage!

  2. Routine stuff for us, I think -- laundry, chores, groceries, etc. Decorating a rainbow cake sounds like fun, Claire! How are you planning to do it?

    1. We just frost the cake and then make a rainbow out of skittles. (Disclaimer: I know that skittles are full of chemicals. However, my son has multiple food allergies, so every once in a while it brings both of us pleasure when he can actually eat something that his friends eat for a very occasional treat.) This is our annual St. Patrick's day dessert.

    2. Yum . . . I love Skittles. Our annual St. Patrick's Day treat is Lucky Charms cereal for breakfast. Fun and tasty, but just as full of chemicals as Skittles and not even as colorful!

    3. I never made the connection between Lucky Charms and St. Patrick's Day! I'll have to keep that in mind for next year.

    4. Sometimes you just have to cut loose & enjoy a bowl of Lucky Charms (I'd be happy with just a whole bowl of the marshmallows from that box!), M&Ms or Skittles...! :)

  3. Cute idea! We might have to try that...but with M&Ms. We are going to have a relaxing weekend and try to go out for my husband's birthday/our anniversary dinner. After eight months of no eating out, it will be a real treat for the whole family.

    1. M&Ms would have been my preference too, but my son is allergic to them. I'm so glad that you're going out to dinner! You deserve it!

    2. God bless you, Claire! I can't imagine the frustration you must have with so many food allergies.

    3. It especially gets tricky when my extended family is together, because in addition to my son's allergies (nuts, dairy and eggs), three and possibly a fourth relative have been diagnosed with Celiac disease in the past 8 years. So the dishes I make for my son aren't always safe for those family members and vice versa. And then there's the realization that I could develop Celiac sometime in the future (my father was diagnosed at age 72, my brother at 36, my niece at 3.5, and now they suspect that my 7 year old niece has it). Crazy! Anyway, in a new twist to my weekend: an hour ago I got an email that there is a bomb threat at the highschool which is right in back of my son's elementary school. The whole highschool is on lockdown. Needless to say, I immediately called my son's school to say that I was on my way to come get him, and to their credit they had him all ready by the time I got there. Never a dull moment around here!

  4. We plan on having my neighbor over for an early celebration of St. Patrick's Day Sunday night with our traditional meal of Reuben sandwiches.

claire: I am sure that is very hard. It is scary with all the genetically modified foods (like wheat!) out there. Have you read anything about soaking grains/legumes to make them more digestible? Fermenting foods can also make things easier to digest.

Thank God your son is home ok from school! Did everything turn out ok at the high school?

  5. Pilgrims: yes, I am thoroughly convinced that GMOs are responsible for the increase in Celiac disease as well as food allergies. No, I had not heard of soaking the grains, but my Celiac relatives really can't have anything that contains any trace of wheat (if they were just gluten-sensitive, as opposed to Celiac, then that might work).

    Enjoy your Reubens! Sounds yummy.
