Favorite Christmas Memory

As I think of the many Christmases I've celebrated, many memories flood my mind.  Growing up in the south, it was always warm and we wore shorts most years.  But I do remember one year...the temperature actually fell to a tad below freezing.  My dad (the best grown-up kid I know) went outside on Christmas Eve after we were in bed and sprayed down the eaves of the house.  When we woke up on Christmas morning, we had icicles!  What an awesome memory!

What is your favorite Christmas memory?

  1. One year Santa's reindeer had left footprints in the snow in our front yard, and a strip of jingle bells had fallen off their harness. That was exciting! And a little scary, actually, because it all made them very real.

  2. Amy, you have brought me two smiles today. First by starting this blog, and second by your Christmas memory. Having lived in upstate NY my whole life, the idea of spraying the eaves to make icicles is something that honestly never would have occurred to me!

  4. I guess my favorite Christmas memories all involve seeing Christmas through the eyes of my son, and most of my favorite ones didn't even occur on Christmas Day. I treasure the memory of the time when he was 23 months old, and ran for the door as soon as Daddy came home from work so he could show Dad the ornament that he and I had made at the library, and hang it on the tree with Dad. And then there was just last week, when we went and cut down our Christmas tree, and the whole ride home, every few minutes, he would say "I like that tree" (he's almost 6 now). And now almost every day he tell his dad "you did a good job putting the star on top of the tree". There is just nothing like experiencing Christmas through the eyes of a child. Especially in my case, since I waited so long to be a mom.

  5. I think one of my favorites was the year I met my (not yet) hubby. We'd only met--blind date--in late Nov. I left town to spend Christmas with my family, 2000 miles away. Since we'd only dated a couple times, it was pretty much "see you next week". But then he managed to get my parent's phone number, and called Christmas day. After that year, we have never been apart on Christmas day--in the last 25 years!

But my most touching memory was when ds#3 was 6. He's our 4th child, and by that time, the older ones had gotten to the point where Mom & Dad were helping them buy gifts for the other parent. At 6, we figured he was too young to worry about it, and he never brought it up, so I thought 'one less thing for me to worry about'. On Christmas morning, tucked under the tree was a tiny package, with 6 yr old printing 'To Mom and Dad". He had wrapped up his rosary in a scrap of paper. It was the only thing he had to give us, and it was precious to him, since his teacher had given it to him. It was a true gift of love, and can bring me to tears to this day.

    2. A lovely story, Mary Therese! Your son was so generous -- unlike me when I was very young. I used to steal things from my older brothers, wrap them up, and then give them back as Christmas gifts. There's a memory for you!

    3. That's hysterical, Anne!

Hey Ladies, I've been brainstorming ways of spreading the word about this blog. A few thoughts: finding the Catholic Digest page on Facebook and posting the link there, asking the former F&F bloggers (Danielle, Rebecca, Arwen) to post an announcement on their personal blogs if they're willing to). Any thoughts?

  6. Here is another idea of what I really liked about the FF blog. Every day was set for a category to write in and talk about. I have noticed that this blog section has been at this Christmas topic for a couple of weeks and no new material has been posted. So, what if a couple of you who post in regularly get together and distribute the days of the week and then on your day you start the new question for the day.
That combined with the possible advertising above may open up the dialog channels a bit.
It is an idea that could possibly work and not be too much work on anybody. I would guess you would have to somehow share the administrative access to this blog with those ladies, but you guys have been corresponding for a while on that long CD link.
    does that sound doable?

  7. Nadine, that is what I planned to do. I am a teacher and DRE, so my life has been full of end-of-semester stuff. I'm hoping to do some planning over the holidays so we can start the new year off strong. Merry Christmas!

  9. Thanks, Claire! I would love for everyone to share their ideas for topics. Do we want the same ones from Coffee Talk or is there something else we want to add?
