Easter Baskets

What do your children usually receive in their Easter baskets?  Here, we do the usual candy and chocolate bunnies, but also a few small items.  Sometimes, it will be a new movie or book and other times, it will be a new spring outfit.  Our daughter is thrilled when she gets new shoes and our son loves video games.  For the grown-ups, we receive our favorite chocolates, music CDs, and books.

  1. My son has multiple food allergies, so that gives me a good excuse to avoid putting candy in his basket (as well as a good way of discouraging extended family from giving him candy). I usually give him some type of religious gift, as well as some little things. This year it will be a book about saints, some fingerpaint, a plastic "Horton Hears a Who" plate, and a few other things that I can't remember.

  2. I am so unreasonably conflicted about Easter baskets. I hate the way they commercialize Easter, turning it into "the Spring Christmas." But we certainly hang stockings and exchange gifts at Christmas, so why do Easter baskets bother me so much? I have no good answer.

Anyway, for each of my daughters I fill a dozen plastic Easter eggs with jelly beans and chocolate eggs. I hide them in the house (not outdoors) and they hunt for them. Sometimes in one egg I will leave directions to look somewhere in particular for a treat -- a chocolate bunny that is too large to fit into an egg. Occasionally I have given them some small piece of jewelry, or a book, or something like that. This year I bought each of them a tiny wooden bird, from a seller on Etsy.

I also fill a dozen plastic eggs with *better* chocolate for myself and my husband. :) The girls hide those and shriek with laughter as we stumble around trying to find them.

I ran across instructions for making really cute bird nests today; I might try making those and incorporating them somehow. Or maybe we'll make them and just use them to display our colored eggs.

  3. Although we do an Easter basket with special Pascha foods that are blessed after the Divine Liturgy versus individual Easter baskets for the children...I will probably be wrapping up some chocolates & do have some books for them (Then Nicholas Sang: The Story of the Trisagion Hymn, The Song of the Tantalon, What Do You Hear, Angel?, & The Ravens of Farne: The Tale of St. Cuthbert). My mom was an expert at hiding our Easter baskets & even did so into our college years, which was sweet.

Anne: I understand what you are saying about commercialization.
